History Of Mehrangarh Fort Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort is one of the city's pride and joy due to its spectacular design and long history. It is perched 410 feet above the city of Jodhpur on a hill known as Bhakurcheeria (the mountain of birds). The fort is one of Rajasthan's most impressive and intimidating royally built forts and palaces.

In the year 1459, Rao Jodha, the monarch of Mandore and the founder of Jodhpur, built the Mehrangarh Fort. While building the city, he learned that the location is safe and distant, making it an ideal location for his capital.

Rao Jodha was cursed, according to folklore, for forcibly removing a hermit named Cheeria Nathji off a hill so that he could build the fort. The hermit cursed that the fort would never have enough water. Rao Jodha built a temple and a residence for the hermit inside the fort to lift the curse and appease him.

Other legends surround the king's efforts to mitigate the curse's consequences. Some tell that in an effort to counteract the curse's effects, he buried a commoner, Raja Ram Meghwal, alive in the fort's foundation.

Mehrangarh Fort's architecture

The Mehrangarh Fort, which honors Rajputana majesty and architectural brilliance, has a history that dates back more than 550 years.

The fort's entryway is comprised of seven gates. Several kings built these gates throughout their reigns as a token of honor for their victory over the troops of Bikaner and Jaipur.

The fort's structure was built between the middle of the 15th century and the late 20th century. This resulted in architectural influences from several eras, which added to its attractiveness.

Furthermore, walls 117 feet long and 70 feet wide enclose the entire structure. The beauty of the entire structure is heightened by some parts where the walls rise up to 120 feet in height. However, the objective of this elevation was to ensure the security of the building's tenants at the time.

Inside the fort are the magnificent palaces Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Jhanki Mahal, Takht Mahal, and Zenada Mahal. On the site, there are also two superbly built temples, Nagnechi Mandir for Kuldevi and Chamundi Devi Mandir for Goddess Durga.

Mehrangarh Museum

The Mehrangarh Museum is managed by the Mehrangarh Museum Trust. This museum, which is housed inside the fort, displays palanquins, royal cradles, furniture, arms, clothing, musical instruments, antiquities, paintings, and other items.

Elephant Howdah: Typically used in the 18th and 19th centuries, howdahs are elephant chairs. One of the gallery's biggest features is a silver howdah given to Maharaja Jaswant Singh by Shah Jahan.

Daulat Khana: As the name suggests, this gallery houses some of the fort's outstanding antiquities, including several works by the Great Akbar.

Turban: The collection displays a range of turban types worn with traditional Rajasthani attire.

Palanquin: The exhibition houses an impressive collection of palanquins, including the Rajat Khasa (a lotus-shaped palanquin), the Pinjas (a covered palanquin), and many others.

Paintings: The gallery displays a great collection of antique paintings and artwork.

Textiles: The show features a beautiful variety of carpets, canopies, tent walls, garments, floor spreads, and other textile pieces from many historical periods.

Sileh Khana: The gallery is loaded with a range of weapons and ammunition used by the Rajputana in the struggle, as Sileh is the Hindi term for "arms." One of the gallery's primary highlights is the 7-pound sword used by Akbar and Taimur.

Wood Craft: As the name suggests, it offers a range of polished wooden items in gold and ivory.
